abstract

The present study focuses on the determination of the biomechanical properties for the human temporalis muscle. Eight pairs of temporalis muscles were collected from fresh cadavers and uniaxial traction tests were performed. Three specific regions were considered within the muscle: anterior, central and posterior. The results show that the central and posterior muscle regions are stiffer than the anterior ones. In order to interpret the different regional mechanical profiles observed in the temporalis muscle, a kinematic structural model for the muscle/joint system is proposed. Age influences the mechanical properties of the muscle, as older samples are apparently stiffer than younger ones. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

 Introduction

In order to understand how the temporalis muscle is related to temporomandibular disorders, the authors chose to characterize the biomechanical properties of the muscles. In the past, some simulations of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) have relied on sets of material constants obtained by testing animal samples (Scapino et al., 1996; Snider et al., 2008). There are in the literature several finite element models, relying on realistic constitutive model parameters, geometries and loads, able to predict the biomechanical response of the different components of the TMJ (Pérez del Palomar and Doblaré, 2006; Nagahara et al., 1999; Rohrle and Pullon, 2007; Koolstra and Van Eijden, 2007). Despite the works of Blanksma and Van Eijden (1995) and Lobbezoo et al. (2000), which have clarified the mechanical heterogeneity of the human temporalis muscle, a detailed knowledge of the biomechanical properties of the temporalis muscle may broaden the understanding of the masticatory system (Blanksma and Van Eijden, 1995; Lobbezoo et al., 2000. The present study focuses on the characterization of the passive mechanical properties using uniaxial tension tests, as demonstrated by Martins et al. (2010). The ethics committee of the North branch of the National Institute of Legal Medicine (INML) previously approved the gathering procedure used to collect the muscle samples. The importance of the present work
